Description: My Hot Rod is a Vauxhall Nova GTE, Custom Built body Kit by Myself from Sheet steel. Twin 40 Webbers. Building Hot Rod. I bought the Nova for £30 as it had extensive amounts of rot and the interior had been completly removed. the only thing left was the steering wheel. I tipped the car onto its side to make work easier on it. The rear chassis was non existant and the springs had gone completely through. so i made my own chassis up from 2" box section, for strength, i also made some triangle sections coming off of the new chassis. I placed another length of 2" box across the entire width of the floor where the back seat area meets the front floor pan and chopped a 2" hole out of the spare wheel well, and put another section of box along the back of the boot floor. and put a section of 2" box between both of those, to prevent it being pushed in easily. I then Welded the Exhaust to the floor. and put the car back onto its wheels. Next i started building the roll cage, which again was built from 2" Box with incisions to allow the box to bend to the contours of the car, the incisions were then seam welded and then ground down flush. I removed both front wings, and cut a 2" hole through the door pillars and inserted a long section of 2" box from the front right to the back of the car. and then Put a section of 2" box between the two at the back and along the area where the dash would have been. The Slam pannel was removed and replaced wit a section of 2" and a section of 1" box making 3" in total this all joined up to the box runnine the entire lenght of the car. This strengthening support was connected to the roll cage to make 1 completly solid structure. The radiator was removed and Triangular sections of 1" box was welded to the front to protect the radiator. ( The radiator has since been relocated into the rear of the car) and sections of 1" box run along the insides of the inner wings. I then built a Strut Brace for the Front from 1" Box, cutting incisions and bending the Strut Brace into shape around the injection system. I mounted the Strut brace by using 1" long sections of 1.1/4" box with one edge cut away. these were seam welded to the strut towers and the strut brace slotted into this nice and tight. I then drilled a 10mm hole right through the strut brace and supports and put a nut and bolt through to secure them together. All welds were ground flush. I cut the inner door skins off and welded some curved sections of 2x1" box into the doors to stop them being pushed in. these were then attached to the roll cage. for further strenght. although the doors were now impossible to open due to all of this the doors were still welded shut and cut down lower to allow easy access. I then welded triangular sections into the outside of the inner wing, for strength. The wings were then placed over the top and welded on rather than bolting. I then decided to add a bodykit for some style, and made it all from sheet steel. most of it being 2mm thick plate.
Paint: I previously owned a Cavalier BTCC replica of John Clellands championship winning car and liked the colour formation and decided to paint it this colour. White with yellow, however it still looked a little plain so i added the yellow markings that were added to the Vectra touring car. Tyres: I have some Michelin M4 Rally forrest tyres. on the front and Road tyres on the rear. I tried some Michelin M4's on the rear but this provided too much grip and did not allow the rear to slide out.
ENGINE: Standard Gte. to start with. I done the first 3 meets on a Standard engine. (Although the engine is a 1.6 it is actually 1599cc which means the car can be raced in the 0-1600cc class however i like a challenge and decided to enter the car into the 1600cc and over class which includes 2.5 V6 alpha, Cavalier 2.5 V6 cavalier 2.0 Sri, 309 1.9 Gti etc etc) I found the car to be competative but not quite enough power to overtake the larger engined cars on the straights, All i was able to do was underbrake into the corners and pip through and hold them off. so i decided to fit some Twin Webber 40's to add power. This proved Succesfull and i could pull away from the rest of the competition on the start line. So far i have only managed to achieve a 2nd place and this was in my First Race, which was quite good. However my Success was to be short lived. as i developed problem after problem. It started with a Puncture in my next two races, then a Blown Radiator. Next the alternator failed and i lost battery power stopping the engine. then twice i nearly rolled the car breaking the front Suspension. Bending the Strut, and bending the Hub. Next the drive shaft snapped, possibly through damage in when i nearly rolled. then i had a Fuel pump Failure, Then i rolled the car Breaking a rear shock, and the radiator again. |
